My Senior Project
On this page you will find information regarding my Senior Project and the process that I had to go through to complete it. You will find my original project proposal, a log of the work that I had to do, the notes that I took as I was doing research, and my final products.
My project was based on dental and nutritional health for children and which habits could have a positive effect on an individual in the future. I mainly researched what these habits could be and with the help of my mentor, Martha Taylor, I was able to reach out to the Kearns Children's Center and present to four different classes about dental hygiene and donate some kits to the kids. I was also able to present to two health classes at AMES with the help of Tamara Aho. |

My Proposed research question:
What are some dental and nutritional habits that children can develop that could improve their health in the future? Before doing this project I had a pretty good understanding of the fundamental habits that people should have regarding their diet as well as how to brush their teeth, but I still didn't have a really good understanding of what these practices could prevent or if there were more specific details that people should be focusing on so I was curious to learn more. Another reason I chose this topic is because I wanted my project to be more involved with people and what I could do to promote a healthier lifestyle to those around me, so I thought that teaching other people what I've learned and giving them tools to help them out ( like the kits) would great. In the end however I focused a lot more on dental health than on nutrition, which I think I really needed to expand on.

Dental Health Presentation at the Kearns Children's CenterI was able to contact the children's center through the help of Martha Taylor and set up presentations to different classes with advice from Kumiko Morse. I presented to four different classes of children ages 4-5 years old on the parts of the teeth, brushing/flossing, and also nutrition.
It was a really great experience because I felt that what I was sharing to the kids was really important and to have them carry the information out would be really beneficial to them. I made a poster that I could use as a visual aid for the kids and brought in coloring sheets for them. My favorite part was giving them their own little kits to take home so that they could start brushing and flossing more, because they genuinely seemed excited about it. |
