'Under God' In the Pledge of Allegiance
This was definitely a difficult assignment to do because the topic that I had to write about was pretty rough. In my English class we had discussed and read articles about the Pledge of Allegiance and whether or not the words "Under God" should be removed.
Originally I was for leaving the words in, but my mind changed quickly as I read the articles which demonstrated many very logical reasons opposed to that idea and many great sources of evidence. However, as much as I was set on my opinion by this point, the topic of the essay that we had to write had to deal with the exact opposite. This assignment fits the critical thinking aspect perfectly because of that reason. I had to really think about how I could possibly agree with leaving the words in the pledge, and what logical arguments there were to really prove this point which I didn't personally agree with. At first I made a few assumptions on what some reasonable arguments might be and then tried to confirm if they were logical using different sources. After viewing these sources I was able to revise some of those arguments and found some great pieces of evidence that really solidified my claim. This process just really fits in with the critical thinking mold of recognizing, evaluating, and drawing a conclusion. That's why I think it's a perfect example. |
