Novel Excerpt
During November 2014, the class's assignment was to participate in NaNo WriMo, otherwise known as National Novel Writing Month. The story could be about anything,or anyone we could think of, we just had to see if we could write a whole novel in just one month.
I had set a goal to write at least 25,000 words in my story.I was sadly only able to make it to a little more than 20%.Ideas were quite difficult to come by during this time because of everything I had already set out into this little universe in my book. The plot was a bit complicated and some of the ideas I wanted to try just wouldn't fit in with the information I had already written. Although it was frustrating, this was a great experience for me as a writer and I'm glad at what I was able to get done. I'm planning on doing this next year as well! |

Play Script
This was probably my favorite assignment of the semester. I learned a lot about basing a story off on dialogue and actions. In this assignment my biggest challenge was probably to try to make dialogue sound more natural. I set my story in a location that seemed a bit interesting but not too fictional. Since I couldn't really make too many actions happen in this script, I tried to make the main character's obstacles a bit more realistic. People, especially kids, seem to always be challenging each other so that is what I chose.

Journal Prompt Entries
This is the sixteenth prompt that we had to write about in our journal. It was about using setting in a story. I learned that setting is really important when an author is trying to get the reader to really visualize the story. I've seen it in a lot of different books and it was great to practice it in this prompt. When writing this my first thoughts went right towards a big city, like New York. This idea led me to think about my interest in superheroes. All of this shaped the prompt and it turned out pretty cool.

This was the eighteenth prompt that I was assigned in the class. The prompt was to make a story starting with us finding our favorite hat in the hands of a mysterious figure. In the moment, for whatever reason, I thought about Pokemon. Some of the characters in this video game helped me set up some of my own in this short story. I added a little bit of action, and a bit of my inner fashion critic to help the story sound a bit more interesting. I think this is the prompt that stands out the most in the journal because, not only was I able to be really creative in just a few minutes, but I was also able to really make it an interesting story. I guess what I learned from this exercise is that ideas can really come from anywhere.
